And We're Off!

As promised...a little peek into the days of our getaway trip, Summer 2017 style!

This was a *little* bit of a last minute trip. While we knew that we WANTED to use some time off between Sean's jobs, we couldn't really plan anything specific until his finish and start dates were final and all was good. So a lot of the details couldn't be finalized until just two weeks before we left, and being that we would be traveling not only in the summer, but over a summer holiday, well...that meant it took just a bit more finessing to make it all work!

We had so many things we wanted to see and visit, but we definitely didn't want to just be on the road everyday. So we decided on two main focuses for our time: first, my youngest brother's home in Colorado (We have a new niece to meet!!) and second, the Black Hills/Mt. Rushmore area of South Dakota!

We decided we didn't just want to drive straight through, so we are making a couple of stops along the way to break up the drive and make the trip a little easier for the wee ones--especially for our little Spicy Asian who is on her FIRST big road trip ever! So far, she's taking it like a champ and hasn't been too salty about the long drives.

For our first stop, we headed to Carlsbad, NM to see Carlsbad Caverns. However, along the way we saw a sign in NW Texas for "Senora Caverns" and decided to be spontaneous! We had time to spare and we would hit it right about lunch time anyway, so we left the beaten path and saw something unexpected!

The views were spectacular!

We made it to Carlsbad around 5:30pm (thanks to an awesome time change that gained us an hour!), had dinner, then headed to Carlsbad National Park in time to see the Bat Flight (sadly they don't allow pics of that as they're not sure how it would affect the bats), but it was awesome!

The drive in was gorgeous!

Today we headed back to the park to tour the actual Caverns and they did NOT disappoint!!

And as some of you may have already seen on Facebook, my husband, also referred to as "VacaSean" on family trips, has decided it is his goal to bring back...planking. LOL

Stay tuned tomorrow for Day 2: Taos!
