This morning we ventured out to Mount Rushmore first thing. It's only 10 minutes from our campground and only $10 for an annual pass! There's a parking garage right in front and a short walk up to the entrance, but you can see Mt. Rushmore from the road in a number of directions.
One of the neat things to see walking in is the pillars surrounded by state flags. Each pillar holds one flag on each of it's four sides. Right beneath each flag is the state name and date it joined the union. The kids found it fun to find Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas flags as we walked in!
At any point walking up toward Rushmore itself you can get great views of the Presidential faces. Up near the base though, you can opt to walk the "Presidential Trail"...a slightly strenuous (250 steps in all) boardwalk of sorts, that has various stops along the way for each president as well as information about the mountain itself. Toward the end, you arrive at the "sculptor's studio", one of the original buildings that stood when Rushmore was first being carved. Inside, you find various images of workers, the mountain pre-carving, the final "draft" of what the mountain was supposed to look like, as well as artifacts and an informative 15 minute presentation.
The "final sculpture" that never saw completion due to the death of the sculptor and beginning of the war.
Mt. Rushmore before the carving.
I must say, upon arrival to Mt Rushmore, I was slightly less than impressed simply because I always imagined it much bigger than it actually is. Don't get me wrong, it's still 4 large faces carved into the side of a mountain...but what I'd pictured in my minds eye from all the images and movies I'd seen, had made me think it would be humongous. That being said, I found it quite interesting to learn all the history behind how it came to be as well as how the carving was actually accomplished...and why it was never completed to match the final draft.
A little family fun with my 4 men imitating the sculpture. LOL
After Mt. Rushmore, we headed off to Hippie Hole. This was only a few miles further to drive, but because it was on winding roads, it took another 20 min or so to get there. We've come to realize that "drive time" isn't equal to miles when driving in the mountains! LOL. The last part of the trek to Hippie Hole is a long winding, one lane dirt road filled with pot holes, that ends in a "parking lot" that's more of a 5 car circle of dirt! Once you park, you begin the hike down to the river, the out to the "hole". It took us about 40 min to hike down.
A view of the hike down!
When you arrive, there are two "pools" in which you can hang out and cool off. The first is the upper pool and isn't for much more than wading. There is one part that is deep enough for an adult to sit in water up to your chest, but it only holds a handful of people so unless you're there at the right time, you end up cooling off in a section that only covers your legs!
The lower part is accessed best by jumping off a waterfall...so in other words, only the boys and Sean did that! It is a much deeper pool and you can fully swim in it. The girls and I would've joined in, but the only way out after jumping in (no thank you!!) would be to climb over some rock ledges leading back up to the top, OR brave a vertical rope climb where one wrong move leaves you dead on the rocks below... Needless to say, we made do with the upper pool while the boys jumped off the waterfall a couple of times and came back up the rock ledge. To be clear, this nervous mama did NOT choose to watch any of the jumping or climbing. I left that to the crazy male side of our family. LOL
"Hippie Hole": the upper pool in the forefront with the waterfall ledge before the larger pool in the center of the pic...that's a 20ft drop.
All in all it was a beautiful, exhausting day and we had an absolute BLAST! Next up, Needles Highway, more hiking, and Tramway Adventure Park!

Palmer Gulch KOA (Day 7)
We spent the day today relaxing and enjoying the campground. To begin with, we slept in!! We definitely all needed that! The girls did a lot of swimming. Boys played a lot of basketball (imagine that!) There's also a large water slide here separate of the pool and all the kids (and even Sean) enjoyed that! I got to do some laundry...yay. But it was definitely needed, so I'm thankful we had the option. We've packed super light for this trip so laundry every 3-4 days is necessary.
The girls got to rock climb--a new favorite of Avalynn's. She made it all the way to the top of this one!! That girl is a monkey!
Jacob and Caed decided later in the day to rent 4 wheeled bikes to explore the campground with. They had fun, although they weren't as thrilled to find they were really only supposed to have them on the bike paths and not the open roadways--which was difficult because other people were walking the bike trails and their bikes would take up the whole bike path. Oh well--they enjoyed it regardless.
Then we spent some time eating dinner and smores around the firepit and just generally hanging out. It was a much needed respite from hiking and venturing out like we've been doing most days. Sean and I walked to the little grocery store on site to grab some items for lunch the next day and ended up stopping in the coffee/wine place. It was great! They had punch cards for 5 wine samples for just $2! So we enjoyed a little adult time and even made some new friends.
However, the evening came to an abrupt close when the oldest managed to get enough service in the cabin to call us and question where we were and if we were ok and why we'd been gone for so long for such a short trip!! LOL. Needless to say we headed back to the cabin and called it a night!
Tomorrow, a short drive to Mount Rushmore followed by a stop at a local place called Hippie Hole where we'll hike out a bit to a fresh water swimming hole!

The Black Hills! (Day 6)
Leaving Colorado, we made the trek north through Southeast Wyoming and into South Dakota. Southeast Wyoming is now lovingly referred to as the land of no cell coverage. LOL. I'm just thankful we started the GPS before we left, otherwise we may have had to stop and purchase a physical map!
This part of our trip is the longest. We are here for 6 nights. We found an AMAZING KOA campground (I say that because prior to this trip, our KOA experiences have been basic campgrounds)! This KOA is an adventure in and of itself! It has a splash pad area, two pools, hot tubs, a playground, bike/ATV rentals, a wine & coffee shop (OH YEAH!!), an ice cream shop, a small grocery store, two basketball courts, a volleyball court, a rock climbing wall and horseback riding!! It was a lovely surprise booking, to say the least! We will definitely spend at least one day just exploring and enjoying the campgrounds themselves!
We are staying in a cabin that is absolutely adorable. It sleeps 8! We have our room, a bunk room, a loft with two twin beds and a fold out couch along with a mini kitchen (just missing an oven), an outdoor grill and our own firepit! We lucked out and also got the cabin on the end of our row, so we have an open lawn to enjoy as well!
Tomorrow we plan to just hang at the campground and relax a bit. Then it's off on more adventures--the trouble will be narrowing them down to just what we can cover while we're here! I must say, it took me all of less than 2 hours to fall in love with the Black Hills. It is breathtakingly beautiful up here!!
If you ever have the chance, it's definitely worth making the trip up here!

Winter Park Fun! (Day 5)
My brother told us about all the fun he had at Winter Park Resort for Father's Day, so we decided to spend our last full day in Colorado there. During the winter months, it is a ski resort, full of little shops and ski-in/ski-out places. Absolutely adorable! During the summer months, they host a ton of activities that you can buy tickets to individually, or with an all access pass, which is unlimited. We chose the unlimited pass.
We all had fun with the Alpine Slide (some call it a Toboggan Slide--quite similar to the one we experienced in China) and the Human Maze, finding all the letters to win a prize. The kids also enjoyed rock climbing and a bounce house. We didn't do the bungee jumping or mini-golf, because the Alpine Slide took the cake as everyone's favorite activity!
Kalea & I preparing to do the Alpine Slide!
Sweet cousins on the Bounce House!
Avalynn LOVES the rock wall!!
Daddy & Kalea headed up to the Alpine Slide on the chair lift!
The weather was beautiful out and the setting was nestled right in the mountains, making for a great place to allow parents to rest (if you choose) and kids to play! We all had a BLAST! And of course, Zoe was a total celebrity with all the small kids--thankfully she was a total trooper and was patient through it all!
We made sure to get a couple pics of all the kids together, even one in age order! Then we headed out for dinner a neat little local brewery/bistro before finishing the evening at a park.
We had such a great time in Colorado and are so thankful we could spend these days with Jonny's family! Everyone was sad we had to leave for our next destination, but we look forward to their visit to San Antonio in the future!!
Next stop, the Black Hills!!

Day 4, Pike's Peak!
We headed out today to the Colorado Springs area. We decided to check out Seven Falls and then make the drive up to the top of Pike's Peak!
Seven Falls is...wait for it...a series of SEVEN waterfalls that flow one into the other. Once you get to the area, you park and take a shuttle 8 min away to where the falls are located. THEN you get to hike about 1 1/2 miles to the falls themselves. You can see the falls from the bottom, or walk up/take the elevator to the "Eagle's Nest" to view them up higher, OR if you're really gutsy, you can climb the 250+ steps to the top to check out the view from there! We decided to do all three! LOL
I was SO proud of my girls!! They weren't excited for the entire hike up, but they were great for most of it! Once at the top there are trails you can hike and we chose the shorter one for the girls sake. Jacob wasn't feeling so great so he hiked back down before we went off on the trail, but otherwise, every single one of us made it--even Zoe!!
Views of the walk up to the falls...
Kiddos mid-hike above the falls:
And the view looking down...can you spy the stairs going up?? YIKES!
After Seven Falls, we headed over to Pike's Peak. We considered taking the Cog Train to the top, but it takes an hour and a half and there's no pulling over to stop if you feel ill AND it's quite a bit more expensive than just driving ourselves to the top. So we opted for door #2 and drove to the top! Thankfully, my SUV survived. LOL
My brave girls!
Selfie with "Mom trying not to freak out". LOL (And this is only part way up the mountain!!)
Yep. Those are the boys and Sean up there...
See? A closer view. They are nuts!!
I may or may not have had somewhat of a panic attack from my fear of heights, which may or may not have led to a grip so tight on my seat that my hand cramped up and I had to massage it to get it to relax...but hey, once in a lifetime, right? RIGHT?! My hubby and younger boys ventured into the land of crazy-trying-to-give-mom-a-heart-attack mode and climbed rocks and ledges that were INSANE. So those pics are all theirs. I wasn't havin any of that!
A pic of Sean & Caed taken by a stranger...bc Mom would've panicked too much to take it!
And of course, Sean's planking continues...some with the boys, some on his own with his crazy self! He's lucky I saw the pics AFTER they'd done it!
My hubby has a death-wish I swear!!

Independence Day! Travel Adventures Day 3
Today we slept in, did some laundry and just relaxed a bit before heading to my brother's house for July 4th. It was so nice to be able to spend this holiday with at least one of my brothers. This was always the holiday growing up that we spent with Daddy. We haven't been together for July 4th in years, so it meant a lot that this worked out!
My little brother lives up in the mountains in Colorado and this was the first time we'd been able to make it to his home since he moved here 3 years ago. It is absolutely breathtaking. Words just don't do it justice.
We all got to meet our new niece/cousin and spend time catching up. We built a campfire, played some corn hole and just took it easy. There is a burn ban where my brother lives, so shooting off our own fireworks was not an option. After discussing it with all the kiddos, we opted to just stay put and skip the 30-45 min drive to find a fireworks show. It was the first time in my life I didn't watch fireworks on the 4th (although we did catch quite a lot of them on the drive back to our hotel for the night)!
Ave has a special bond with all of her Aunts so far--and Aunt Nicole fits right in!
Tomorrow we tackle Pike's Peak!!

Taos...Kind of
So the "plan" for Day 2 was to spend the night in Taos, NM, and the next day visit the Taos Pueblo, a Native American village that has been inhabited for over 1000 years by the same people group.
We headed out of town toward the Pueblo. We arrived...only to find signs saying "Pueblo CLOSED". When we were able to stop and ask a young man directing traffic when it might re-open, he told us it was closed through Wednesday for a funeral. We were disappointed, but obviously, we understood why. Another time!
So as we headed out of town, we decided to stop at the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge. A similar, and smaller, version of the Royal Gorge Bridge, it did was beautiful! Now I will admit--I made the poor decision to attempt to walk across the pedestrian part of the bridge...only to find myself light headed and sweaty-palmed. I snapped the pic I wanted and headed back to the car to drive across instead. LOL. I always try to convince myself that I'm surely not as petrified of heights as I believe myself to be. But no, no I AM. It's crazy how absolutely terrified it makes me. But I digress...
We made the trip the rest of the way into Colorado, where we will spend a few days. We stopped at Garden of the Gods first. We haven't been here in almost 16 years! It's still just as breathtaking as before! Even our little dog Zoe enjoyed the hike around!
This is what my family does while I stay on the ground with the dog and take pics!
Jacob obliged me with reenacting a photo from the last time we were here...when he was only 15 months old! I will post the photos side by side once we are home--that was pre-Facebook and blogging so it's in a hard cover photo album!
When you're 5 and decide you've had enough walking for the time being, it helps to have a big brother who will humor you with a piggy back ride!
And of course, I couldn't possibly leave out the latest "planking" pics...apparently it's beginning to catch on! LOL
We've settled in to our hotel for some rest. Tomorrow WE MEET OUR NEW NIECE and see my little brother and family!!!!! By far, this will be my favorite part of the trip and give me my baby fix! ;)
Have a safe holiday, y'all!!
